Song Details

Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm. 2 Timothy 2:19 NIV

Written by Nancy Gordon and Jamie Harvill (musician, worship leader, songwriter best known for writing Ancient of Days, Firm Foundation and Because We Believe).

How this song came about:

Their very first opportunity to write some songs together came when they were asked to submit some songs for a country album about to be produced. They wrote what they thought was an absolutely fantastic song. Their song was accepted for the album, everyone loved it and everything seemed to be in order for it to appear on the project, but in the end, it was cut from the list. Jamie and Nancy were very disappointed. During a subsequent phone conversation, they found themselves discussing their bafflement and disappointment that the song was rejected. Nancy told Jamie “Just that morning I had been reading in the Scriptures and saw a phrase in the Living Bible, ‘I have a living hope.’ When I read that, a deep desire welled up within me to sing those words.”

Jamie told Nancy, “we were wrong to put so much hope in men. We need to pick up and go forward.” Nancy then said, “We have a living hope!” Jamie answered, “And we have a future.” Nancy said, “Our conversation was like a volleyball game of encouragement. We were both aware that we had placed our hope in a song we had written and not in our God. Through the ministry of encouragement Jamie and Nancy actually talked themselves into the song ‘Firm Foundation.’ Almost line for line they were exhorting one another not to be discouraged in the circumstances but to put our hope in God’s holy Word. Most of the lyrics were written over the phone.

Firm Foundation Medley by Nancy Gordon and Jamie Harvill was one of the songs released from a project entitled ‘Firm Foundation’ by Integrity Music.
